It comes down to simple Math.
Dog Tsunami – One female dog can produce 2 litters of 6-10 puppies a year. This means that one unspayed female and her offspring can produce over 67,000 dogs in 6 years.
Why spay?
Do you know 67,000 people who want a new dog?
Why Spay/Neuter?
Georgia ranked 6th highest in the U.S. with close to 20,000 dogs/cats killed in shelters in 2025.
Thousands of dogs/cats euthanized for nothing more than space.
Spay/Neuter is extremely important as we struggle with the worst overpopulation crisis in a decade.
Medical Benefits to Spay/Neuter
– Spayed/neutered pets live longer than unaltered pets.
– Eliminates the risk of pregnancy and delivery related problems.
– Spaying prevents uterine infections and decreases the incidence of breast tumors, which can be malignant.
– Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.
– Neutering your male companion can help prevent testicular cancer and prostate disease.
Behavioral Benefits to Spay/Neuter
– Spaying female pets eliminates heat cycles and associated nuisance behaviors, including incessant crying, anxiety, urine spraying, roaming to find male and/or attracting male pets.
– Neutering male pets curbs roaming away from home to find females in heat, urine spraying, marking their territory, and/or some dominant behaviors.
Debunking Spay/Neuter Myths and Misconceptions
Pet owners cite many reasons why they won’t spay or neuter their pets. Among them:
“My pet will become fat.”
Too much food and lack of exercise make a pet fat. If you monitor food intake and provide exercise, your pets will stay trim.
“Purebred so can’t be fixed.”
Purebreds and their offspring also end up homeless in shelters. Purebreds not spayed or neutered can also contribute to the problem of overpopulation.
“I will find good homes for all of the kittens or puppies.”
If each of the great homes ready to welcome your pet’s offspring would instead adopt from a shelter, they–and you–could potentially save the lives of deserving animals waiting for a new home. Shelters and rescues cannot keep up! We get messages daily from all over Georgia. They are making hard decisions.
“It’s not cost-effective.”
Compared to the cost of emergency care for a complicated pregnancy or delivery, or the cost of vetting & caring for a litter of kittens or puppies, it’s definitely the better, most cost-effective option.
